McGehee City Council Minutes
November 7, 2000
The McGehee City Council met in regular session on November 7, 2000 at 5:30 P.M.
Members present: Mayor Poole, Aldermen: Mark Day, Mike Rogers, Ricky Lattimore, Al Murphy, F.H. Gill, Mrs. Jimmie Perkins, Fire Chief Allen, Ambulance Director, John Millwood and Police Chief, Vernon Farrell.
Minutes: After the reading of the October minutes, a
motion was made by Alderman Murphy, seconded by Alderman Perkins
to approve as read. Motion carried.
Treasury Reports: Alderman Murphy made the motion to approve, seconded by Alderman Gill. Motion carried.
Bills: After a short review of the bills, a motion was made by Alderman Day to pay all bills, seconded by Alderman Rogers. Motion carried.
Old and/or New Business: A salary increase for the police
department will be deferred until the new budget year. A previous recommendation
provided an increase from $17,000 to $20,000 for certified and non-certified,
from $16,400 to 17,500.
Mayor stated that in order to provide pay increases, a cut must be made in
other areas. Factors to be considered is that
revenues are down while fuel and insurance has increased. Another meeting
will be held prior to the next council.
In other discussion, Mayor Poole presented a contract with the
County Sheriff's Office to provide dispatch services during
non-business hours. The County will pay the salary expense for one dispatcher.
Alderman Rogers made the motion to
provide the service, seconded by Alderman Perkins. Motion carried.
Other business was the transfer of property on Ash Street. A
motion was made by Alderman Murphy to deed the street
right-of-way to the property owners, seconded by Alderman Gill. Motion carried.
Property owners will pay the legal
expenses of the transfers.
Due to two vacancies on the Planning Commission, Mayor Poole made the recommendation of Linda Hardin and Steve Montgomery as replacements for Gaynell Glover and Mr. Robert Adcock. A motion was made by Alderman Lattimore, seconded by Alderman Rogers to accept the recommendation. Motion carried.
Other topics for discussion was the application for an airport
grant for overlay and terminal repairs. Mayor Poole
recommended seeking assistance for the cleanup of the burned buildings on
Main Street. Mayor Poole also reported
that legal defense insurance was increasing. He said that he will update the
council at the next regular meeting.
Police Reports: Chief Farrell reported an increase in 911 calls
and discussed the purchase of a slightly used police car.
Attorney Drake will research the legality of making the purchase.
Water Company Reports: Mayor Poole reported that soon water
will be a problem. Due to the dropping of water tables,
the public must be made aware of the problem.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
