McGehee City Council Minutes

July 10, 2001

 

The McGehee City Council met in regular session on July 10, 2001 at 5:30 PM.

MEMBERS PRESENT: Mayor Poole, Aldermen: Mark Day, Mike Rogers, Ricky Lattimore, Linda Hardin, F. H. Gill,
Mrs. Jimmie Perkins, City Attorney Drake, Fire Chief Allen and Inspector Gober.

MINUTES: After the reading of the June Minutes, Alderman Day made the motion to approve as read, seconded by
Alderman Perkins. Motion Carried.

TREASURY REPORTS: After a short review of the enclosed reports, a motion was made by Alderman Gill to approve
as presented, seconded by Alderman Rogers. Motion Carried.

MOSQUITO CONTROL: Alan Loe, with VDCI, gave the June report for mosquito control. He stated that June was a
bad month. Mosquito populations exploded into some of the highest numbers seen. Trucks were out 27 truck nights and
service requests ran at a higher rate than normal. Aerial applications were applied 5 times during the month. July numbers
should lessen during the month. Graphic printouts were in each folder.

OLD AND/OR NEW BUSINESS: Discussion was opened by a meeting report with Paws and Claws. A need for
expansion was the focus point. The cost is approximately $3000.00. Alderman Rogers made the motion to allow the
needed $3000.00 for extension and improvements, seconded by Alderman Hardin. Motion Carried. Also brought forth
was the needed process of handling the animals after the staying time had lapsed and what constitutes a vicious dog.
Mayor Poole appointed a steering committee composed of Alderman Rogers, Attorney Drake and 2 Paws and Claws
members to bring forth recommendations.

PLANNING COMMISSION: A public hearing will be held to determine procedures on locating a manufactured home operating as a business be allowable under a R-2 zoning. The Planning Commission granted the variance but according to Attorney Drake, the present ordinance would have to be amended in order for it to be legal. Attorney Drake stated there
were 3 choices; amend the text of the zoning ordinance by allowing manufactured homes in R-2 or commercial areas, or to through the re-zoning process; or the City to reimburse the resident for the removal.

Other discussion brought forth from Alderman Hardin, was a search for a new grocery store. She said there was a need
for competition because of the high food costs. Many families and shopping out of town. Mayor appointed Alderman Hardin, "Doc" Bilberry and any others interested in assisting with the search to improve our community.

The Street Department was commended for the clean-ups around the town.
